Progress across social groups has been uneven in Gujarat. Scheduled tribes in particular have a very high incidence of poverty and slower poverty reduction than other social groups in the state. Gujarat’s scheduled tribes also stand out for high levels of open defecation and poor access to drinking water. In addition, there are wide differences between social groups in schooling and access to salaried jobs.
