Sections on Kenya and Madagascar remain unchanged compared to the previous ISR. BURUNDI: The Burundi grant is closing this October 31, 2014. As of October 15, 2014, disbursements were at 95.29% (SDR 12.86m, equivalent to US$19.17m) and the project is expected to disburse 101% by the end of the grace period (additional funds available due to exchange rate fluctuation). The Burundi Project is rated Moderately Satisfactory for both progress toward achievement of the PDO and for overall implementation progress. The ratings in the tables are Satisfactory to reflect the consolidated rating for the overall phase (including Kenya and Madagascar which are both rated Satisfactory) and therefore diverge from the Burundi specific rating. The BBs (Burundi Backbone system) network, the major component under the project, is now mostly complete and all three phases are fully operational. This is the first fiber optic network ever been deployed in Burundi. The network has country-wide coverage, the roll out of the planned 1,254km of fiber optic has been completed and is connecting 17 provinces with a capacity of 100Mbs. The only works yet to be completed are two relatively minor microwave links and the installation completion of lightening protection, and these are expected to be completed by the project closing date. The COMGOV (virtual network linking 49 governmental institutions and universities, built on top of BBs network) is also complete, with all sites fully operational. The COMGOV services, also supplied by BBs provide connectivity to the Government for the next 10 years. The contract (between Government and BBs) can be expanded for additional capacity or to cover additional institutions as required, through contract amendments if needed, adding flexibility and sustainability to its operation beyond the end of the project. The setup of BERNet (network linking universities) is at its final stages under the supervision of 2 dedicated consultants. The business plan has been finalized, and the contract to physically connect 11 universities with fiber and to the Internet has been signed with BBs. The equipment for the BERNet capacity is already in the country, has been installed in all sites, and is expected to be fully operational by the project closing date. Verification of these installations is also expected by the closing date.
