The next phase of civil works, which are also located in southern Rakhine, started in November 2019 with a comprehensive training for the contractors on technical issues and safeguards. The 1/20/2020 Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Myanmar Flood and Landslide Emergency Recovery Project (P158194) procurement of the Detailed Design and Supervision (DDS) consultancy for Stage 2 works is progressing with contract signing expected in February 2020. Component 2: Resilient Rehabilitation of Rural Roads and Livelihood Support: Civil works in Ayeyarwady, upgrading 20km of roads, were completed. Bid evaluation reports for the next phase (Stage 1.2) of works totaling about 40km in Sagaing region were completed and approved by the World Bank. Designs for the subsequent phase (Stage 1.3) of works, which include the pilot use of recycled plastics for 6km of road works and four bridges in the Ayeyarwady region, were completed. It is anticipated that the contract for the DDS firm will be approved by the World Bank by March 2020. Component 3: Project Management and Knowledge Support: The Immediate Response Mechanism (IRM) items were deployed to affected communities after the 2019 floods to provide relief and support. Capacity-building and training on monitoring, asset management and safeguards compliance was provided to MOPF and implementing departments on the use of the Immediate Response Mechanism (IRM) items. Field missions were conducted in the second half of 2019 to select areas including Rakhine, Bago, and Nay Pyi Taw, which provided capacity building at the local level. Component 4: Contingent Emergency Response. Following heavy monsoon rains which caused widespread flooding and landslides, the World Bank conducted a rapid desk-based assessment in line with the GRADE methodology. Using government and publicly available data, and using geospatial methods for verification, the cumulative damages of flooding occurred within a specific timeframe were assessed. Based on damages estimated from the reported impacts, the private housing sector was the hardest hit, followed by agriculture and then non-residential buildings and infrastructure. The report was shared and discussed with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MOSWRR).
