The first call for youth in five counties (Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Kwale) took place in December 2017 and training in the five counties started in February 2018. The current status of the individual project activities are as follows: Intake of youth: The intake for Cycle 1 took place from December 2017 to January 2018, in which over 90,000 applications were received. A randomized selection of beneficiaries took place in public fora, in all Cycle 1 counties for stakeholder buy-in and to make the process transparent. For cycle 1, approximately 4,000 youth were selected to participate in training and grant support to entrepreneurs. All youth were inducted either through induction sessions prior to the life skills training or at the first grant orientation. Preparation is ongoing for Cycle 2, in which 4 more counties will join the program. Component 1 Training: Life Skills and Core Business Skills Training (LST and CBST) for Cycle 1 beneficiaries took place between February 2018 and March 2018. In Cycle 1, National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) has procured the services of 34 formal training providers and approximately 500 master craftsmen in 25 trade areas. Approximately 350 master craftsmen have been upskilled in the Cycle 1 counties and in April 2018, beneficiary youth have been matched to training providers and master craftsmen. Component 2 Grants: During the public randomization, over 2200 youth were selected to take part in the Entrepreneurship Aptitude Test (EAT). From the youth who took the EAT, 1100 were ultimately selected to receive grants. The first grant orientation sessions were held in March 2018. These orientation sessions were one-day classes where the youth were able to develop simple business plans and determine how they would utilize the first grant tranche. Component 2 Business Plan Competition: Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) has started the procurement process to bring on a firm to manage the competition. The impact evaluation for the business plan competition has also progressed since the last status report. Component 3 LMIS: The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection (MLSP) has made progress in undertaking an informal sector survey, updating the Kenyan National Occupational Classification (KNOCS), and designing a labor market information system (LMIS). The informal sector survey is the most developed of all the activities under the MLSP with a pilot completed on May 5, 2018. However, preparation of a roadmap for the LMIS has been delayed.
