Significant progress has been made and there is evidence that most activities will be completed before the closing date of December 31, 2018. For instance, out of the twelve major contracts, the following have been completed: (a) Webuye-Kitale road section (60km), except for the additional works on one interchange at Webuye which will be completed by March 2018; (b) Bachuma Gate-Maji ya Chumvi (53km) except for one new bridge which is expected to be completed by end of December 2017; (c) an office complex for Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and the access road; (d) supply and installation of air navigation equipment, thus enhancing the safety of the Kenyan airspace; (e) emergency activities at JKIA including international passenger arrival terminal facility at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi; lounges for airlines; (f) acquisition of fire tenders; and two interchanges at Nakuru-Njoro junction and Mau Summit-Kericho junction. Also, completed include all the five feasibility studies and detailed engineering designs of the selected five road sections will be completed in the next five months and include: (a) Mombasa Northern Bypass; (b) Lake Victoria ring road; (c) Malindi-Gaissa- Madogo; (d) Nakuru-Loruk-Marich Pass; (e) Nakuru-Nyahururu-Marua. Others completed include feasibility study and detailed engineering design for augmenting water supply to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi; Kisumu International Airport; and Moi International Airport, Mombasa. 2 . The implementation of the recently awarded contracts is advancing and if uninterrupted will be completed before the credit closing date of December 31, 2018. These contracts include: (a) construction of two additional lanes along Athi River-Machakos turn off (21km) road section, at 45 percent complete; (b) an office block to house the headquarters for KeNHA and other road sub-sector institutions at 40 percent complete; (c) reconstruction of Kakamega-Webuye road section (40km) at 40 percent complete; (d) expansion of Kisumu Boys-Mamboleo (4.5km) at 52 percent complete; and Nakuru-Nyahururu junction at 50 percent complete. 3 . The construction of two new interchanges at Kericho/Kisumu junction and Ahero/Kisii junction has just begun and will require stringent monitoring. These are new activities included in the project to address road safety concerns. These locations are black spots and many lives have been lost resulting from road accidents. 4 . The Bank has provided its no objection to the technical evaluation report for consultancy services contract for the rehabilitation of the runway at MIA for which the related works will be financed by the French Development Agency (AFD). Meanwhile, the selection of a consultant for design of power upgrade at MIA is facing challenges. KAA contends that the shortlisted firms failed to submit proposals by the submission deadline. The bank has requested KAA for a proposal on the way forward by end of November 2017. 5 . Kenya obtained category 1 status allowing for direct flights to the US, a major achievement. Kenya Airways plans to start operations to the US by April 2018. 6 .
