All are expected to be completed by November 2015. Of the 250 shared toilets for smaller compounds, 108 have been handed over, and a further 40 are to be handed over this month. Of the fourth lot of 50, 10 are under construction. Component 2: Development of desludging services 8 operators are equipped, trained and working. Initial take-up was slow, as expected, but has improved. The service is well accepted by users. There is a challenge with the poorest families, who tend to have pit latrines (harder and more expensive to empty than septic tanks) and cannot afford the improved service. A subsidy mechanism will be developed based on the new sanitation service charge to be introduced by the Maputo Municipal Council (MMC). MMC wants to roll out the service in other areas, and 4 more operators will be trained. Component 3: Sanitation and hygiene promotion and monitoring Baseline survey complete. 55 activists recruited and trained, and working materials procured. The activists have helped to site improve sanitation facilities and carried out a series of face-to-face hygiene promotion activities.
