Two of three rounds of block grants to 43 villages and six sub-districts are financing community-identified priorities, including the construction and rehabilitation of buildings, the creation or expansion of savings groups and community cooperatives, natural resource conservation and ecotourism, water supply, and activities promoting local wisdom and education. Eleven completed grants to civil society organizations and their networks are strategically focused on peace-building, such as the development of a peace curriculum and associated training, psycho-social treatment for victims of violence, and improvement in quality of education and promotion of local language. In addition, these organizations are working more closely with government agencies to advance related policies and programs. For example, one group has finalized the development of language fonts for the local, spoken Yawi language, which if adopted by government will be used throughout the south. The Women’s Network is organizing a peace dialogue bringing together SBPAC, ISOC and non-state actors to create an enabling environment of the peace process.
