Substantial progress has been made in the restoration of the highly degraded Gishwati-Mukura landscape through multiple interventions. There has been considerable scaling up of landscape restoration activities, including restoration of former illegal mining and other degraded sites within the Park, protection of river corridors and demonstration of agroforestry and silvopastoralism activities in the buffer zone. Livelihoods improvement planning for people around the National Park has also been completed and approved. Livelihood subprojects have started implementation, with five sub-projects generating profits. Actions have been agreed for the development of a proposal for the national park as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (BR). A consultant has been selected and a first draft of the BR 5/11/2019 Page 1 of 6 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Landscape Approach to Forest Restoration and Conservation (LAFREC) (P131464) proposal is expected by the end of June 2019. The project is facing delays in the flood forecasting and preparedness component given technical complexities for the establishment of a Flood Early Warning System and the complex institutional arrangements for operating such system.
