An important milestone has been reached with the completion of the hydrogeological study for the new Cheesemanburg landfill in October 2019. The tendering of the design-build of the new Cheesemanburg landfill is expected by April 2020. The design and tender documents for the construction of a perimeter wall around the existing Whein Town sanitary landfill have been prepared. The bidding process for the construction of the wall will start at the end of the raining season (end of December 2019). The selection of the consulting firms for the design of the partial closure of the Whein Town landfill, and the environmental and social audit of the Whein Town landfill and the two transfer stations is underway. Significant progress has been made towards the procurement of waste collection equipment financed through the grant to equip the beneficiary local governments with critical equipment to support their efforts, while helping to alleviate the financial burden of the high existing rental cost for the 12/13/2019 Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Cheesemanburg Landfill and Urban Sanitation Project (P159961) equipment. The first and second lots of equipment have been supplied (with handover ceremonies attended by donors, Monrovia and Paynesville City councils). These included front-end-loaders, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and tricycles. Approximately 90% of equipment that was to be procured has been completed, except for five (5) mini dumps trucks which are expected to be delivered within the next quarter. Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers, are being installed in every piece of equipment to better track their use. To increase and strengthen the public awareness, the project launched two study tours/site visits, for students from two schools in Monrovia. Students, both male and female at various ages ranging from 11-20 from the selected high schools, were shown around the primary and secondary solid waste facilities, as well as a local recycling facility. In addition, a series of community engagements and consultative meetings were conducted.
