A first cohort has already graduated from the two year Associate's Degree in Education (ADE) and a second cohort will graduate in December 2013. Some of the first cohort ADE graduates have also continued into the now officially approved two year (follow up) Bachelors in Education (B.Ed.) by the University of Guyana (UG). GITEP also continues to progress towards the improvement of the effectiveness in the delivery of teacher education. The second ADE cohort has already started to benefit from the Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Report No: ISR11950 improved quality of the teacher training program offered by Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE). For instance, these teacher students are currently undergoing the newly design practicum semester within the ADE curriculum which provides a richer learning environment for student teachers to practice in school classroom settings (their scores in this assignment will be available at their graduation). Public Disclosure Copy An internal desk review of teacher educators’ qualifications against their terms of references (TORs), developed under the Project, was conducted for the first time in CPCE to measure in a systematic way the quality of teacher educators. This exercise shows that (CPCE) faces important human resources challenges since only one in five teacher educators meet the requirements under their TORs. The Project is helping improve this situation by financing on-line postgraduate studies for teacher educators and by providing continuous professional development to staff at CPCE and UG. To complete the teacher educators' evaluation exercise a classroom practice observation tool will soon be designed and implemented. To improve effectiveness the Project has: designed the (1 year) induction scheme to provide the necessary support to new teachers and to ensure that they sustained and reinforced what they learned during the ADE program in their daily teaching practices (the second ADE cohort graduates will be the first to benefit from this program); completed the delivery of a management course to 76% of management staff at CPCE and UG; and 2 ICT labs at CPCE and 1 at UG have been opened and a need-based ICT training for teacher educators is being implemented based on the results of a customized survey to measure the use of ICT as a tool to improve classroom instruction at CPCE.
