The project will complement as well as assist on-going efforts of key resource regulatory authorities to conserve critically endangered and highly endemic plant and animal species and their habitat in the Kihansi catchment. Has the Global Environmental Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project Objective? The project spending level has increased thrice and about 15% of the grant amount has been disbursed between February and September 2015. The project has commissioned key studies and consultancies planned to start during the first and second years of the project including: Economic analysis of water use of Lower Kihansi Hydropower Plant and Communication Strategy. Identification and mapping of important water sources and biodiversity hotspots in the catchments has been carried out as part of development of the Kihansi Catchment Management Plan. The project has engaged the Department of Crop Science and Production of Sokoine University for assessment of the status of wild coffee and other key species endemic to the Kihansi Gorge. Trainings for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the communities in the catchment in Kilolo, Mufindi and Kilombero districts have been conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Foord Security and Cooperatives and a total of 116 people have so far been trained. Community representatives were drawn from eight villages from upstream and downstream of Kihansi river, with a total of 20 female participants. Other participants included: Ward Executive Officers; Village Executive Officers; Subject Matter Specialists; Extension Officers; Plant Protection Officers; and project teams from implementing districts. A second training, which was organized for environmental management and biodiversity conservation was delivered to 40 key staff from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), including Kihansi Gorge attendants and engineers based at Kihansi Hydropower Station. There were four female participants in this training. The project has also procured most of the required research and field equipment, including specialized items for Kihansi Spray Toad captive breeding facilities and vehicles. The Kihansi Spray Toad (KST) captive breeding program in Tanzania is progressing well. The captive facilities at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and Kihansi are doing well and the number of Kihansi Spray Toads (KSTs) has shown a positive trend for several months, particularly at UDSM. Currently the total population of captive bred KSTs in Tanzania is approximately 1400 from both UDSM and Kihansi facilities. The team of experts continues to monitor the key ecological indicators for the gorge including amphibian populations, wetland vegetation, macro-invertebrates, water quality and (land use/cover every five years). The last survey was carried out between 2 and 6 May, 2015 and KST was recorded in one site in the upper spray wetland. The detection rate was about ten toads per person-hour during the night time and one toad per person-hour during the day time. This rate is lower than that recorded in February 2015, when the population size was 1500, suggesting the toads re-introduced in the gorge have declined in numbers. Based on the current detection rate of 11 toads per person-hour (the maximum value of toads detected per person-hour), the present population size of Kihansi spray toad in the Kihansi gorge is estimated at 589 toads. KST captive breeding assurance population in the US - The most recent communication from the Toledo and Bronx zoos indicate that the captive population of KST in the Toledo zoo and the Bronx zoo is approximately 5000. The next transfer of KST to Tanzania will be in December, 2015. 10/27/2015 Public Disclosure Copy Page 2 of 7 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project (P126361) Risks Systematic Operations Risk-rating Tool Risk Category Rating at Approval Previous Rating Current Rating Political and Governance  --  Moderate  Moderate Macroeconomic  --  Moderate  Moderate Sector Strategies and Policies  --  Moderate  Moderate Technical Design of Project or Program  --  Moderate  Moderate Institutional Capacity for Implementation and Sustainability  --  Substantial  Substantial Fiduciary  --  Moderate  Moderate Environment and Social  --  Moderate  Moderate Stakeholders  --  Moderate  Moderate Other  --  Substantial  Substantial Overall  --  Moderate  Moderate Results Global Environmental Objective Indicators PHINDGEOTBL  Landscapes that incorporate biodiversity considerations as per IUCN classification criteria for protected areas are conserved.(Hectare(Ha), Custom) Baseline Actual (Previous) Actual (Current) End Target Value 0.00 0.00 0.00 5500.00 Date 24-Nov-2014 30-Mar-2015 30-Sep-2015 31-Dec-2018 Comments Due to delayed disbursement for about 12 months after project effectiveness, data collection for baseline information has also been delayed. The project is currently undertaking an identification and mapping of critical ecosystem areas within the catchments. Findings from this exercise will contribute to the determination of baseline information for biodiversity hotspots and associated landscape areas to be protected. 10/27/2015 Public Disclosure Copy Page 3 of 7 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project (P126361) PHINDGEOTBL  Operational guidelines for conducting environmental flow assessment and a sustainable financing plan for the Kihansi catchment are developed and mainstreamed.(Yes/No, Custom Supplement) Baseline Actual (Previous) Actual (Current) End Target Value N N N Y Overall Comments Values have not changed from the last mission, however good progress has been made in terms of identification and mapping of critical biodiversity hotpsots and water sources in the project area.
