Teachers and principals are eligible for substantial and permanent wage increases if they perform well in a year- Intervention long assessment process that emphasizes factors including test score performance. Participation is voluntary but the majority of Mexico's teachers have participated. Promotions are determined by a point score that combines many factors including supervisor reviews and student test scores. Intervention 1991-2002 Period Sample The sample contains 76567 teacher observations in 27213 schools. There are also 5055 principals in population 5051 schools. The study compares teachers who have various levels of eligibility of promotion. Presumably, teachers Comparison would exert less effort if their score indicate they are very far from promotion, or their scores are so conditions high they do not require any extra effort for promotion. Many of the teachers faced very weak incentives.
