The submitted proposals cover a range of topics including nutrition (biofortification), animal health and production (poultry, cattle, fisheries), conservation farming technologies, intensive farming systems in peri-urban areas (vegetables, dairy), agro-processing, ICT information platforms, and cereal/legume intercropping. • Launching of innovation platform approaches for on-going projects in Botswana (horticulture), Zambia (legumes) and Malawi (fruit juice extraction), along with development Public Disclosure Copy of possible small ruminants project. Support and expansion to underutilized crops program and coordination of other externally regional projects such as APPSA and the FARA- financed sub-Saharan Support Platform (Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe). • Development of initial online knowledge and communication platforms and registering of over 1,000 members to various online communities of practice, including linkages to FAO and CTA platforms. • Convening of the first CCARDESA General Assembly in May 2014 (one of CCARDESA’s mandated governance bodies), with participation of stakeholders from most CCARDESA Member States, the SADC Executive Secretary, and Botswana Minister of Agriculture. • Development of partnerships with RUFORUM, Africa Conservation Tillage Network, AU-IBAR Livestock Programme, as well as facilitation with the SADC Deans of Faculties of Agricultural Sciences network and SADC Directors of Research Network. The CCARDESA intern program has been launched with plans to expand to a sabbatical program within the region to facilitate exchange and learning. Upcoming activities in the 2014 work plan include, among others: finalizing the first grant cycle with the aim of awarding between 5 and 6 sub-grants for implementation in the upcoming agricultural season; launching of an in-depth technology inventory in all Member States to identify and document available technologies for upscaling; and continued engagement with NARS to provide capacity building support and knowledge services; and expansion of Secretariat capacity. Short term training on proposal writing will also be provided in 2014 to contribute to greater capacity of NARS actors to develop viable R&D proposals.
