The project was signed on December 7, 2016, became effective on August 4, 2017 and publicly launched September 14, 2017. Several activities have already been implemented. Three major strategic studies i) the organizational and functional assessment of the teacher training institutes (the 3 ENIs and the ENS), ii) the assessment of the directorate of in-service training, and iii) the assessment of INRAP. The findings from these strategic strategies have been shared with government and largely discussed with all technical staff. The findings will be used as a basis for the envisioned reforms the sector must undergo to strengthen the quality of education. In addition to the strategic studies a knowledge exchange trip to Tunisia was organized. The minister of basic education himself visited Tunisia for one week along with six other high level officials. The minister deemed the trip very satisfactory. Another important activity was the organization of a workshop focused on the upcoming school censuses for all three sub-sectors. The 3-day workshop was attended by more than 60 staff. The workshop will lead to the collection of school data and the production of new school statistics which are expected to inform the revision of the education sector strategy. The core team of the Project coordination Unit is expected to be in place by December 15, 2017. the core team is comprised of (i) the head of the PCU, (ii) the financial management specialist, and (iii) the procurement specialist. The steering committee (SC) for the ESSP has been officially established as of 22 September 2017 by the Ministry of Plan, Statistics, and Regional Integration which also presides the SC. All three education ministries are represented in the SC along with the Prime Minister's office, the ministry of finances, and civil society.
