Since the initiation of the project, an EITI MSG and Secretariat have been established; 8 MSG meetings have been held to date, including a total of 98 people. EITI awareness raising activities have been conducted in the 5 provinces in which mining prospecting/exploration are currently taking place, including engagement through media to further disseminate information from these training events. This field work has also supported an information needs assessment, to identify key information gaps among landowners, provincial government, and NGOs, and to better refine how best to share information with all stakeholders. The Solomon Islands has produced reports covering the 2012 and 2013 financial years and is on track to produce the 2014 report before the December due date. 7/9/2015 Page 1 of 4 Public Disclosure Copy Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Solomon Islands - Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Implementation (P118757) While the Solomon Islands has made significant progress in its EITI candidacy - in having established a Secretariat and MSG, and having produced reports for 2012, 2013, and 2014, it still faces significant challenges. The Secretariat is in the process of completing its 2014 report; the MSG has decided that for the 2014 report, of the 35 extractive companies present in the Solomon Islands in 2014, payments will be reconciled from the 2 main prospecting companies (Axiom KB Mining Ltd and Sumitomo Solomon Islands), while payments received from an additional 28 companies will be unilaterally reconciled, in terms of what government has received. The remaining 5 prospecting companies will be excluded from the report, given that their activities relate to gravel/quarrying and may considered in the 2015 Report. Validation by the international secretariat will take place in July 2015, and it is unclear if Solomon Islands will be validated as an EITI compliant country, due to the significant gaps in the previous reports, and non-participation by some of the significant producers in the country. A national EITI workshop is scheduled to take place after the validation, in which the Solomon Islands government will be faced with critical decisions regarding how it wants to proceed with EITI. In order to account for completing activities under this grant, the project is being extended until December 2015.
