The governance structures at all levels to facilitate effective 12/27/2018 Page 1 of 9 Public Disclosure Copy The World Bank Implementation Status & Results Report Sustainable Land and Water Management (P098538) project implementation [Project Steering Committee (at the National Level), Local Steering Committee, Technical Coordination Office (at the Regional Level), District Watershed Planning Teams, Community Watershed Management Teams, Community Resource Management Committees, CREMA Executive Committees] are functioning well. Project overall performance is Moderately Satisfactory, as this is an interim ISR, the overall performance will be revised during the upcoming implementation support mission in January 2019. As per the latest November 2018 progress report, the project overall continues to demonstrate good progress on implementation of the core SLWM activities and continues to show an increasing demand for adoption of SLM practices. Key achievements since April 2018 include:  A total of 37 communities, about 8851 farmers, in the 12 project districts undertook watershed planning exercises, and are implementing 2,072 sub-projects;  67 project communities (2,010 people) in 7 districts were trained on financial management relating to Village Saving and Loan Association (VSLA). It was noted that VSLA has improved women access to financial sources and other farm inputs;  Payment for Environment Services (PES) pilots showed encouraging initial results on seedling survival and many farmers replacing (at their own cost) the seedlings that have died.  Activities for the formation and establishment of CREMAs (covering 600,995ha in over 7 districts) in the Western Corridor of the three northern regions have been completed and a corridor-wide management plan encompassing the six CREMAs with specific action plans has been prepared.  A total of 9 shea nut processing facilities are in place, including the recent two in Gbedemblisi and Yezesi communities. And a total of 1260 (male-647 and female-613) have been supported with inputs and trainings in beekeeping and shea-nut processing (alternative livelihoods). And additional 45 community members from 9 communities (CRMCs) trained in patrol techniques and ecological monitoring, bush fire management and law enforcement. The following key issues remain valid and they will be updated following the February 2019 IS mission.  Complete the final negotiation stages for CREMA establishment and provide the relevant documents to the WB, which will support upgrading the rating.  Discuss and develop further payment options for PES to be tested, to optimize the mechanism and allow more coverage of communities.  Provide the sub-project screening results for review and feedback.  Explore design options for shea roasting oven to improve the burn efficiency of firewood in line with ensuring environmental health and safety recommendations for works contracts.  Record the impact on crop yields and document data in all future progress reports.
