Industrial recovery, dependent prin- cipally on coal as a source of energy, was considerably retarded. During the two years that fol- lowed, however, there was a steady though irregular improvement in European coal output. In view of the continuing importance of coal in the European economy, this book was designed to pre- sent a comprehensive picture of the progress of production in the major European coal producing areas. In addition to post-World War II data showing the degree of recovery which has been achieved, the long-term trends in production, employment, and output per manshift, since 1913, are presented for comparative purposes. No analysis of the data shown has been undertaken in this volume. Other important aspects of the coal situation such as consumption, level of stocks and the volume and pat- tern of trade will be presented in a sequel to this publication. The first group of charts consists of summaries, showing the individual areas in combination or in comparison with each other. One chart shows the total post-World War II production monthly for all the areas, and also presents most recent quarterly production for each of them, compared with the pre-war quarterly average. Others summarize, on an index basis, production and output per manshift annually since 1913 and quarterly since the end of the last war. The remaining charts are grouped by individual area. In each case, one chart shows production, employment, and output per manshift data annually since 1913. For more detailed current information, weekly or monthly total production and average daily production data are shown on a second chart. An additional chart shows progress towards the production targets set by the Committee of European Economic Co-operation for those countries or areas participating in the European Recovery Program. In general, data are shown through May 1948. A final section contains basic statistical data, by individual area. The countries or areas considered in this book are Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Western Germany (U.K. - U.S. Zones), the Saar, the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom. (The U.S.S.R., for which complete and comparable statistics are not available, is omitted.) Unless otherwise stated, data are for existing territorial boundaries and adjustments for changes have been made where neces- sary, as for example, in the case of Poland. Because of its many changes in status, the Saar is pre- sented separately. In Germany, production in the Western Zone only is shown in view of the diffi- culty in obtaining comparable information for the Eastern Zone. For a number of areas, there are gaps in the data during 1914-1918 and 1938-1945. Details of both hard and brown coal production are shown only in those areas where the latter is of any significance; namely, in Western Germany and in Czechoslovakia. In all other areas, details of hard coal production alone have been given, although output of brown coal has been included in the target charts described above.
